Why does my PDF look faded?

6 min read

“Faded” is a symptom, not a diagnosis. A PDF can look faded because the scan was faint, because the text was set in light grey, because the file is soft and low resolution, or because of the way you are looking at it. Each one has a different fix, and fixing the wrong one is the usual reason nothing seems to work.

Two minutes of checking will tell you which one you have.

Start here: is it the file, or the way you are viewing it?

  1. Open the PDF in a second viewer or on a second device. If it looks fine there, the problem is the first viewer or screen.
  2. Check the obvious viewing settings: screen brightness, dark mode, and any “page colour” or “high contrast” override in the viewer or the operating system.
  3. Zoom to 400% on a letter. If the letter is a solid dark shape on white, the file is fine. If it is a pale grey shape, the faintness is in the file.
  4. To be certain, take a screenshot at 400% and open it in any image tool with a colour picker. A healthy page has text pixels near black, below about 60 out of 255, and paper above about 235. Text pixels around 120 or higher mean the ink really is faint.

The four causes of a faded PDF

  • The original was faint. Thermal receipts, carbon and NCR copies, old fax printouts and photocopies of photocopies were weak before anyone scanned them. The scan captured what was there.
  • The scanner was set up for the paper, not the ink. Many scanners expose so that paper comes out white and avoid clipping, which leaves faint ink in the mid-greys. Low-density or “economy” scan profiles make it worse.
  • The text is light grey in the file. A digital PDF can have text set to 60–70% grey. It looks refined on a bright screen and weak on paper. This is common in templates and exported design files.
  • The page is soft or low resolution. Heavy compression or a small image stretched to fit smears strokes into their surroundings, which reads as fading even if the ink is dark.

What fading looks like in numbers

Fading is a small gap between ink and paper. On the faded demo scan used on this site, the ink measures about 187 and the paper about 231 on the 0–255 lightness scale (measured as the 2nd and 95th percentile of the page). That is a gap of 44. A healthy page has ink near 0–40 and paper near 240–255, a gap above 200.

The practical point: as long as the gap is above zero, the information is still in the file. Fixing a faded page is a matter of stretching that gap back out, not of finding something that is missing.

What can and cannot be recovered

If a stroke is even slightly darker than the paper around it, it can be pulled back towards black. If it has faded to exactly the paper’s colour, nothing remains to amplify, and no tool can bring it back. In practice that happens at the ends of lines on very old thermal paper.

A scan that is blurry or low resolution has a different problem: the detail was never captured. Contrast helps readability but cannot restore it. See how to sharpen a blurry PDF.

How to fix a light PDF

  • Faint scan: use Fix a faded PDF, which pushes the ink darker while leaving the paper alone, and compare the result before you download.
  • Light grey digital text: use Darken PDF. On pages made of text and vector graphics it rewrites the colour of the text itself, so it stays real, selectable text. Or fix it at the source and re-export with black text.
  • Soft file: sharpening and contrast can help a little; see the guide linked above.
  • Thermal receipt: scan or photograph it soon. Thermal paper darkens with a chemical reaction to heat and fades with heat and light, so the record gets worse with time.

Questions

Why does my PDF look faded only on my phone?

Phone screens at low brightness, dark mode and the viewer app’s own colour handling can all make a normal page look washed out. If the same file looks fine on another device, the file is not the problem.

Will printing a faded PDF make it darker?

No. A printer reproduces the tones in the file, and it cannot add contrast that is not there. A faint page usually prints fainter than it looks on screen. See why a PDF prints too light.
