Inkjet printer printing too light: what to check
7 min read
When an inkjet prints faint, the cause is usually one of five things, and the quickest way to find it is to separate “the printer is faint” from “this file is faint” before you touch any settings. Then work through the printer causes from the cheapest check to the most involved.
Menu names differ between printers and drivers, so treat the names below as descriptions of what to look for.
First: the printer or the file?
- Print a page from a different document that you know normally prints well.
- If it is also faint, the problem is the printer. Continue below.
- If it prints normally, the file is the problem. See why a PDF prints too light and use Darken PDF for printing.
Uniformly faint, or with gaps and streaks?
Run the printer’s nozzle check or test pattern, usually under maintenance or utilities. A complete pattern with every line solid points to settings or ink supply. Gaps, missing lines or streaks point to blocked nozzles in the print head.
The causes, cheapest check first
- Economy or draft mode. A quality setting set to draft, fast or economy prints lighter on purpose. Set the quality to normal or best for the test.
- Wrong paper type. The driver adjusts how much ink it lays down for the paper type. Selecting a type that does not match the paper in the tray can give faint or blotchy output. Set it to what is actually loaded.
- A black-only or colour-saving option. Some drivers have options that substitute or limit inks. Check the colour and grayscale options if only some colours are faint.
- Blocked nozzles. If the nozzle check has gaps, run the printer’s head-cleaning routine, then print the pattern again. Repeated cleaning uses ink, so do not loop it more than the manual suggests.
- Low or empty cartridge. A low cartridge can print faint before the printer reports it empty. Replacing or refilling it is the fix.
Why plain paper and inkjet do not always get along
Ink absorbs into plain paper and can spread, which makes text look lighter and softer than it does on a coated paper made for the printer. If the output on the printer’s own recommended paper is darker, the paper is part of the cause. A heavier or inkjet-specific paper often helps.
When the file is faint, not the printer
If other documents print well, darken the file instead of changing printer settings. A printer setting is per printer, while a correction in the file applies wherever it is printed. Darken PDF for printing measures the page and darkens the ink; the PDF print optimizer tells you what it found first.
Questions
Why does my inkjet print fine in colour but faint in black?
The black cartridge or its nozzles may be low or blocked, or a driver option may be limiting black ink. Run the nozzle check and look at the black lines in particular.
Will a head cleaning fix faint printing?
Only if the nozzle pattern shows gaps. If the pattern is complete, cleaning will not help, and it uses ink.
