How to darken a PDF in Adobe Acrobat, and without it

7 min read

Plenty of people try Adobe first, and it is a reasonable place to start. But what you can do depends on which Adobe product you have, and the free Reader is not an editor. This guide separates what the common programs can do from what they cannot, so you do not spend an afternoon looking for a menu that is not there.

Menu names change between versions and between Windows and Mac, so the steps below say where to look rather than promising a click path. If a name differs on your screen, search the program’s help for the same word.

Adobe Reader (the free one)

Reader is for viewing, filling forms, commenting and printing. It does not change the colours or contrast of the page content. There is no darken button, and the accessibility colour options only change how the page looks on your screen, not what is sent to the printer.

What Reader does give you is the print dialog. Look at the printer’s properties for quality, toner or ink density, and economy settings, because turning off a toner-saving mode makes every document print darker. Reader’s own print dialog also has an advanced option to print as an image, which can help with a strange rendering problem but does not make faint text stronger.

Acrobat Pro and other paid editors

Paid editors can do more. In Acrobat Pro and similar programs you can usually select text and change its colour, which is the clean fix for a digital PDF whose text was set in grey. Some also offer scan clean-up or image adjustment options aimed at scanned pages. Look under the editing and scan or optimise tools for contrast, brightness or enhance options.

Print-production tools such as Preflight can change colours across a whole file, but they were built for press-ready files. They are a heavy tool for “my scan is faint”, and the wrong settings can change colours you meant to keep.

Other desktop programs, such as Nitro, PDF-XChange and Tungsten’s PDF products, vary by edition. Some can adjust page images, some only edit text. Check the edition you own before relying on a feature that a review mentioned.

The free route that needs no download

  1. Open Darken PDF in your browser. There is no account and no program to install.
  2. Choose your file. It is processed inside the tab and not uploaded.
  3. Compare the before and after preview. Raise or lower Text Darkness under Advanced settings if needed.
  4. Download the darker copy and print that, with the printer’s economy mode off.

How the options compare

  • Adobe Reader: free, fine for printing, no way to darken the content.
  • Acrobat Pro and similar editors: can change text colour and some can adjust scanned images, but they need a paid licence and some learning.
  • Browser tools that upload your file: quick, but your document goes to someone else’s server, which matters for contracts and medical papers.
  • This site: free, runs on your device, handles scans and digital PDFs, and shows a before and after preview. It cannot rebuild detail that a scan never captured.

Which one to use

If the PDF is digital and you own an editor, changing the text colour at the source is the cleanest option. If it is a scan, or you only have Reader, a tone-curve tool is quicker. For a scan that is faint, grey and slightly crooked, start with Make a scanned PDF darker. For anything that will go on paper, finish with Darken a PDF for printing.

Questions

How do I darken a PDF for printing from Adobe Reader?

Reader cannot change the content, so darken the file first with a tool that can, then print the new copy from Reader. In the print dialog, check the printer properties for a toner-save or draft mode and switch it off.

Can I darken a PDF in Adobe Acrobat for free?

The free Reader cannot. Acrobat Pro can change text colour, and a trial of a paid editor may be available, but a browser tool such as Darken PDF is free and needs no licence.

Is there a way to darken a PDF without it costing money?

Yes. The tool on this site is free, has no watermark and works on up to 100 pages and 50 MB per file.
